Kaohsiung District Prosecutors’ Office Cracks down Cross-Border Telecom Fraud- 35 Suspects transported to Taiwan from Philippine and China

Kaohsiung District Prosecutors’ Office Cracks down Cross-Border Telecom Fraud- 35 Suspects transported to Taiwan from Philippine and China Kaohsiung District Prosecutor Luo Shui-Lan(羅水郎)commanded police officers in Taiwan to cooperate Philippine law enforcements to search several criminal spots located in Taiwan, Philippine and China and arrest several suspects involved in telecom fraud and successfully seized 11 million 380 thousand New Taiwan dollars of illegal gains. With assistance from Foreign Affairs Department, through international mutual legal assistance (MLA), 35 Taiwanese suspects were extradited from Philippine to Taiwan on April 24th, 2014 and later sent to Kaohsiung District Prosecutors’ Office for further inquiry. Finally, 8 suspects were detained by the court order for further investigation. The criminal gang used telecom and internet facilities to fraud victims to ask them to transfer money by ATM to designated banking accounts and ordered their henchman to withdraw proceeds of telecom fraud. Prosecutor Luo organized a special task force to combat telecom fraud and ask mutual legal assistance through Cross-Strait joint Crime-Fighting and Judicial Mutual Assistance Agreement and agreement on mutual legal assistance between Taiwan and Philippine. The case is a successful mutual legal assistance among different jurisdictions to combat cross-border crimes. Prosecutors in Kaohsiung District Prosecutors’ Office are dedicated to cracking down fraud gang and recover proceeds of crime to compensate the loss of victims.
