KDPO Devotes to Tackling Booming Cigarette Smuggling

It had been reported that smuggling activities have been soaring in Taiwan recently. In order to prevent our internal market economy from disorder and to protect the rights and benefits of Taiwanese farmers and fishermen, KDPO Prosecutor Shui – lang, Luo（羅水郎） commanded the officers of the South Costal Patrol Office, investigators of the Investigation Bureau, the police, and some professions from relevant administrative departments to monitor suspected activities tightly.
After collecting sufficient and crucial evidence and information, they found out that some suspected smugglers had planned to transport overseas cigarettes to Taiwan before the government imposes tobacco tax, which will predictably cause the prompt plummet of the domestic cigarettes sales. Consequently, those smugglers took risks in smuggling cigarettes to make extremely lucrative but illegal profits at the cost the general public’s health. Prosecutor Luo thus ordered the officers from South Costal Patrol Office, Kaohsiung Custom Office, Kaohsiung City Police Department, and Kaohsiung Harbor Police Office to search the alleged smuggling cargo ship by 8 a.m. on 12th September at at Pier 3 in Kaohsiung Harbor. Furthermore, Prosecutor Lo required to seize the cargo ship and to arrest all the suspects. More than 1000 parcels of pre-tax, smuggled cigarettes were discovered and therefore confiscated on the freighter. The captain and other 11 people are now under an investigation launched by Prosecutor Luo on the violation of The Tobacco and Alcohol Administration Act. Meanwhile, Prosecutor Luo still endeavors to trace back the conspirators and the hidden criminal organizations thereof.
