Protect Our Streets: KPO Cracks Down Illegal Street Racing Illegal street racing and other dangerous driving activities continue to be socio-economic problems throughout the Kaohsiung City. This November, head prosecutor Kuo Wu-I (郭武義), prosecutor Chu Wan-Chi(朱婉綺), prosecutor Hung Rui-Fen(洪瑞芬)and prosecutor Xiao Wan-I (蕭琬頤) of Kaohsiung Prosecutors Office (“KPO” hereafter) were reported by the Kaohsiung City Police Bureau that numerous motor racers blocked the roads in Fun-shan and Da-liao districts and assaulted on-road civilians, public order thus threatened. As it turned out, over 20 motor racers, rallied via the internet, blocked the road and randomly assaulted the pedestrians by hamlet, baseball bat and knives. Such abominable deeds shocked and exasperated the general public. Directed and supervised by prosecutors, a task force was established to eradicate the aforementioned offences related to motor racing. Other law enforcement agencies also endeavor to probe the street racing offenses and seize the motors used by the offenders. Hazardous street racing not only causes the death of young lives but also endangers the public order. Indicting street racing offense is not the only remedy. Prosecutors could defer prosecution with certain conditions such as community service to encourage those young street racing offenders to divert their superfluous energies. Prosecution cannot fix the problem alone, and the cooperation with the parents of the young offenders and the local communities seems inevitable. By working with PTA and local communities, KPO encourages youngsters to resort to activities beneficial to their souls and bodies. Hopefully such reckless street racings will be abandoned among the young generation. To maintain social safety and social order, KPO will incessantly crack down illegal street racing and protect our streets for all citizens accordingly.
